Star Trek: The Experience 2.0

A handful of us have been making the pilgrimage to Vegas for several years now, some of us more than once a year. One of the great traditions that was started early on was a visit to Quark’s bar at the Las Vegas Hilton to partake of a “Warp Core Breach”. (See video.) The “breach” can’t really be described. It has to be experienced.

Sadly, Quark’s closed a year or so ago and we all mourned the passing of our beloved beverage. But just as we had begun to accept our loss it appears we may have another chance.

Moving & Reopening

Mayor Oscar Goodman stated in a news conference on October 16, 2008 that a possible deal was currently being negotiated between CBS and Rohit Joshi, developer of the
Neonopolis Mall.[3]

On February 27 CBS confirmed that Star Trek: The Experience will be moving to its new home in Neonopolis. The hope is to have it open by May 8 for the launch of Star Trek. The new experience will not be exactly as its predecessor and it will show more of the original series. The project is not expected to be complete until 2010.[4]

However, before this reopening, apparently a good deal of the Star Trek memorabilia will be viewable at Star Trek: The Exhibition at the Arizona Science Center.

So it appears that Quark’s is reopening and one would have to believe that they will bring back The Breach. According to TrekMovie.com:

"Return of STTE looks good - but not finalized. As of now it appears that Star Trek The Experience is very likely to reopen (in a number of phases) at Neonopolis some time in 2009 (with May being the earliest). The first phase is likely to be just Quark’s Restaurant and Bar and some shops and possibly the ‘Museum of the Future.’ The full experience with rides would be in 2010, but the nature of what those rides and 4D movie are is still being worked out. It is expected that once all the details are nailed down, CBS will finally make an official announcement."

For those of you that have managed to avoid the whole Trek thing, don’t worry. We aren’t going to dress up like Klingons (although we might drink some blood wine). We won’t be spending all our time at Quark’s but we will have to go downtown to check out the new digs at some point. Plus, it will give us an excuse to see Old Vegas.

Start making your plans and let me know if you’re going to be able to join us. You know you’re coming. Resistance is futile.

Live long and prosper.
